Dimensional and Cross-Cutting Assessment in the DSM-5

چکیده
With the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; hereinafter referred to as the DSM when used in the general sense) set for release in May 2013, counselors are awaiting changes that may affect how they diagnose. A significant proposed change to the DSM-5 is the addition of dimensional assessments to the categorical diagnoses (American Psychiatric Association [APA], n.d.). The current edition of the DSM (4th ed., text rev.; DSMIV-TR; APA, 2000) uses a categorical classification system. A categorical diagnosis has only two values: the presence or absence of a disorder. Categorical diagnostic systems assume that mental disorders are discrete entities, with relatively homogeneous populations that display similar symptoms and attributes of a disorder. Because client populations are typically heterogeneous and do not fall neatly into diagnostic categories, this assumption has led to many problems and shortcomings with the categorical system (Regier, 2008). Problems such as excessive comorbidity, irresolvable boundary disputes, and excessive use of the not otherwise specified (NOS) categories have become endemic to the manual (First, 2010a, 2010b). To address the limitations of the DSM-IV-TR (APA, 2000) and improve clinical utility, the DSM-5 Task Force is proposing the addition of dimensional assessments to every categorical diagnosis in the DSM. Dimensional assessments are rating scales that measure frequency, duration, severity, or other characteristics of a disorder. The assessments provide additional information to assist counselors with diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment monitoring. In addition to including dimensional assessments for individual disorders, the DSM-5 Task Force is also proposing cross-cutting assessments to measure diagnostic symptoms commonly seen in

DSM-5 field trials in the United States and Canada, Part III: development and reliability testing of a cross-cutting symptom assessment for DSM-5.
OBJECTIVE The authors sought to document, in adult and pediatric patient populations, the development, descriptive statistics, and test-retest reliability of cross-cutting symptom measures proposed for inclusion in DSM-5. METHOD Data were collected as part of the multisite DSM-5 Field Trials in large academic settings. There were seven sites focusing on adult patients and four sites focusing o...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Five-Factor Model and DSM-5 Personality Traits on Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder
Objective: Despite the fact that new criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) were resulted from Five-Factor Model (FFM), there are a small number of studies that investigate the relation between proposed personality traits and FFM. Also, cross-cultural study in this field is needed continuously. Though, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the relation between the FFM and DSM...

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is common in adults, and associated with comorbidities and negative consequences in many parents of children with ADHD. The aim of this study was to determine ADHD and personality disorder in parents of children with ADHD compared to the healthy group. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive and the analytic study were conducted i...
متن کاملA simple approach to the two-dimensional guillotine cutting stock problem
Cutting stock problems are within knapsack optimization problems and are considered as a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard problem. In this paper, two-dimensional cutting stock problems were presented in which items and stocks were rectangular and cuttings were guillotine. First, a new, practical, rapid, and heuristic method was proposed for such problems. Then, the ...
متن کاملIterated Local Search Algorithm for the Constrained Two-Dimensional Non-Guillotine Cutting Problem
An Iterated Local Search method for the constrained two-dimensional non-guillotine cutting problem is presented. This problem consists in cutting pieces from a large stock rectangle to maximize the total value of pieces cut. In this problem, we take into account restrictions on the number of pieces of each size required to be cut. It can be classified as 2D-SLOPP (two dimensional single large o...
